Lillian and Dorthy , 1940s
Photograph

This photograph features Lillian Sam walking down the street with her friend Dorthy, an indigenous Canadian woman. According to Marielle, Lillian lived most of her life as a social outcast. In her early twenties, she moved out of Vancouver’s Chinatown, but the new community protested for her arrival because she was the only Chinese living on the block. Lillian made friends with people who had a similar diasporic background, including indigenous and Italian Canadians.
