Oriental Inspirations , 1980s
Garment

The Oriental Inspirations were designed by Cydney Mar, a third-generation Chinese, Scottish, and indigenous Canadian designer and entrepreneur. Cydney believes that designers can create with their signature and express who they are through clothing. Therefore, many of her designs incorporate Chinese elements and Asian themes. The Oriental Collection was a unique collection she created for the QVC Shopping Channel to celebrate different Chinese festivals, from the Dragon Boat Festival to the Lunar New Year. Unlike many Chinese Canadian women of her generation, Cydney’s cultural expression is not explicitly connected to her Chineseness but also explores pan-Asian themes. For instance, cherry blossoms and other Japanese patterns are repetitive motifs that inspire her creativity. Her collections explore the experiences of being Asian in both the fashion world and the Canadian context, juxtaposing the Eastern and Western worldviews to express her cultural knowledge, artistic freedom, and expanded horizons.
