In a place beyond the Panopticon prison
45.6 x 32.9 cm (h x w)

This piece of work is about grappling with the heartlessness of neoliberalism and striving to stay in contact with the freedom of the imagination. Against the backdrop of our current political climate, our work environments are becoming increasingly untenable, precarious, authoritarian and dehumanizing.
I made this painting in response to my experience working in a call centre. Through abstraction I wanted to reflect on the idea of each individual’s internal liberty; a space of dreams and the imagination that is impenetrable.  This felt most aptly expressed through abstraction in contrast to the automaton-like function of my daily grind.
I later read Jamie Woodcock’s  ‘Working the Phones - Control and Resistance in Call Centres’. Jamie Woodcock went undercover in a call centre to write this book and it resonated with my own observations and experience.
