The Jebena, reimagined , 2022
100 x 150 cm (h x w)
Ceramics

My work is an interpretation of the jebena, the traditional coffee pot used in Eritrea as well as other parts of East Africa. The pieces are reflective of the traditional form and functionality of the jebena while incorporating sculptural elements inspired by pre-colonial African art and societies. The
communal ceremony of making coffee has a beautiful simplicity about it that cultivates connection between all who observe it. My love and deep appreciation for the ancient ritual objects used in Eritrea inspires me to uphold traditional methods of craft and to preserve the integrity of these objects while exploring new ways of relating to them through spatial design.
