Annelies Marie Frank was a Jewish girl born in the German city of Frankfurt in 1929. The rise of Adolf Hitler and increased antisemitic sentiments led Anne’s parents Otto and Edith Frank to move their family to Amsterdam. There, Otto founded a company called Opekta, which made products used for making jellies and jams. Hitler's regime continued to grow more and more aggressive, and in May of 1940, the Nazis invaded the Netherlands. Fearing persecution, the Franks went into hiding in July of 1942, in the annex of Otto’s business premises. While in hiding, Anne kept a diary that provided incredible insight about living under Nazi occupation. On August 4, 1944, the Franks and others who were in hiding with them, were discovered, arrested, and sent to concentration camps. Anne would be sent to Auschwitz and later to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp where she and her sister Margot died. Anne’s mother died at Auschwitz. Her father Otto Frank survived the Holocaust and dedicated the remainder of his life to human rights work around the world. Mr. Frank had Anne's diary published and it has been translated into more than 60 languages.
