Brooklyn-born Shirley Chisholm was a politician, educator and author. She was the first African-American woman to be elected to the United States Congress in 1968, representing New York's 12th congressional district. In 1972, Chisholm became the first African-American candidate for a major party nomination for President of the United States. Chisholm famously once advised, “If they don't give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.”
