Artist Statement

The process of creating this the photo was about forcing myself to try new things: I don’t usually take studio portraits, and I don’t like manipulating portraits too much, as it can change the person’s face. Further along, I found that the sketches change how I view the subject’s face shape. Subconsciously, beauty standards were drawn on during the sketching post-production; they give the illusion of a sharper and stronger jawline, slimmer nose, etc.

While the sketchy appearance gives a portrait more edge and looks cool, my photo also reflects how we think about our outward appearance and the changes we make to them.

The blue lines are most noticeable, focusing on the subject’s face and clothes. I believe those are the main ways people change their appearances through stylish clothing and makeup, covering up acne and scars and hiding their body dysmorphia. While highlighting how people change their exteriors, hopefully others can be more aware of the lengths they go to appear different and assess if they truly need to.
