STORY:
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II officially opened this lookout on February 11th 1974. From this popular spot you are treated to sweeping vistas of the Kingston and Arthur’s Vale Historic Area, with a large group of buildings dating back to the Island’s convict era. Such is its cultural significance, that this area has been formally inscribed onto both the Australian National Heritage and UNESCO's World Heritage lists. It is recognised as being among the best surviving examples of large-scale convict transportation and settlement. It is also significant as the only site in Australia to display evidence of early Polynesian settlement, and the place where the Pitcairn Island descendants of Bounty mutineers were re-settled in 1856. Here on Norfolk Island, people must give way to cows who, oblivious to history, are content to bask in the warm sunset glow and feed on abundant green grass.
