Rosanna Li Wei Han is fond of telling stories with her sculptures. She is distinctive in embodying the local culture and sentiment of the city in her sculptural works. For example, her work Congee, Rice Noodles, Noodles and Rice is exemplary in evoking the local culture of cha chaan teng (Hong Kong-style restaurant or cafe). Her sculptural works intend to engage viewers in the story-telling. The artist believes that it is important to consider how viewers will resonate with her sculptural works in the art-making process. She believes that it is important for an artwork to communicate with viewers while engaging them in the artistic experience; it is an integral part of her artistic creation.
The Yuanyang Café (detail) is one of the sculptural works in Li’s cha chaang teng series of ceremic figurines. The artist loves to hang around in cha chaan teng and drink jin joeng (coffee with tea). Therefore, she chooses them as the subjects of her artistic creation. The artwork represents a mundane scenario in cha chaan teng, in which we can find single customers, couples or friends drinking teas and chitchatting, people using laptops, etc.
