Ensuring that students access knowledge from whatever sources are available to them, whether that means through family members, in their first languages, or through their neighbors validates students' background. They should feel valued through their artwork, in order to nurture their growth rather than create a punitive environment in educational settings. The goal I have as an educator is to guide students into explorations of how they can develop, reflect on, and promote an appreciation for their authentic selves. This can only be done in underscoring the importance of a disability-centered approach to wholeness of experience, a reminder that who we are, and how we are in learning environments is valuable and should be cultivated and supported.
