This piece inspired by multiculturalism includes a variety of skin colors in the shape of a handprint. The paint, beads, wood pieces, buttons, and buckle piece are repurposed from Southeast Asian jewelry, European clothing, and thrifted art supplies. Some of the items are painted over, as a warning of assimilation, while others remain natural and are bound together by a single thread. Ultimately, the divisiveness in the work accentuates how pervasive colonialist hegemony is in westernized institutions, such as schools, hospitals, and professions, and how crucial it is for diverse peoples to establish and maintain healing spaces.
