His passion for forging his own identity as an international painter and visual artist in all its forms has since art school (BA Hons Fine Art 1st) has remained throughout his career as a leading soundtrack composer and multi- instrumentalist.
It’s about a certain power and energy. The images are often within a suggested political context allied to the more visionary aspects of landscape. I plunder magazines, newspapers and books. All forms of visuals being reduced with thinners and lacquer and then re-worked. I believe passionately in the aspect of painting which seeks to engage on a political level. The subject matter of which might be overt or more subtle at any one time.
Influences range from Caravaggio, Turner, Monet to Schwitters, Rotella and Rauschenberg.
And then there's the music, to which I often work. As much as Miles, Coltrane, Brian Wilson, Stone Roses, Pat Metheny, Weather Report might dictate a direction so Howells, Tallis, Palestrina, Vaughn Williams, Barber or Tavener might dictate another.
The radio's a different matter.
As is silence.
His ward winning commercials work includes, amongst many others, Perrier [Alphabet campaign with Terence Donovan - Gold Lion Cannes] Halifax and Faberge, along with numerous TV idents and arrangements including Channel Four, Anglia, Meridian and Carlton and scoring for TV series and documentaries which again amongst others included the BAFTA, RTS, award winning ‘Press Gang’ (ITV/Central TV)
He founded The Red Orchidstra whose version of the Roy Budd theme from the seminal '71 Brit gangster movie '‘Get Carter’’ is regarded as a groove classic and was the most requested record –ever – on jazzfm.
His solo work includes amongst a body of work ‘Symphony Of The Spirits’ and ‘Etudes Paolina’ and his beat-voxflute tour-de-force ‘Big Buddah’. He has also contributed to LWT’s ‘South Bank Show’ on ‘Miles Davis’ and ‘Weather Report’ and wrote and produced ‘The Wonderful World of Louis Armstrong’ featuring Kingsley Amis. As a writer and director/playwright his first stage play “Through The Grapevine” (the life of Marvin Gaye) received its world premiere at The Shaw Theatre. As filmmakers Hole In The Wall Productions have featured regularly at international festivals including Cannes where in 2016 HITW’s short ‘Poolside’ was selected for the CFBC’s ‘La Nouvelle Haine’ category. His most recent outfit ‘Mysteries Of The Revolution’ released its eponymous debut album on HITW’s label ‘Blue Serene Focus’ and its second album 'Longing For The Dawn' is due for release in May 2022.
