Farmers are desperately trying to keep their livestock alive amid worsening drought conditions. In southern Somalia, Abdullahi Arab has lost nearly all his livestock in the country’s severe drought, which has displaced around 719,000 people since March 2022.

With no pastures in sight, keeping his remaining livestock alive proves to be nearly impossible. Abdullahi can barely afford the high cost of feed, and he can’t sell his remaining camels, as they appear too gaunt. Abdullahi’s family was forced to flee their home due to insecurity, and they’re now among those who face hunger from the widespread drought — expected to cause 20 million Somalis to need emergency food assistance. The sweltering heat has withered their livelihoods, causing hundreds of thousands of Somalis to leave home in search of water, food, and shelter.

With exports from the Ukraine–Russia region paralyzed, Somalia now faces skyrocketing prices of staple goods. Access to food and water is shrinking. Each setback brings Somali citizens one step closer to starvation, with 2.3 million people already food insecure prior to the war in Ukraine.
