Official Donnacona Crest
Clarenceux King of Arms officially approved the Donnacona crest on the 16th of January 1948 and it was passed as a sealed pattern by the naval secretary on the 9th of February 1948. The original endures to this day.
HISTORY OF THE CREST
The HMCS DONNACONA ship badge shows the hands of Chief Donnacona and Jacques Cartier in the clasped position and out of them arises the device of Canada, three red maple leaves conjoined on one stem and on a field argent or white. The Significance is when Jacques Cartier returned to France from his first voyage to America, he took back with him two Native braves. They returned to America with Cartier on his second voyage and acted as guides. They told Cartier about the settlements of Stadacona and Hochelaga on the St. Lawrence River and referred to them by the Huron-Iroquois word Kenneta, which means "a habitation." Cartier thought that they were telling him the name of the country, which he had not yet explored. At the point where the St. Charles River flows into the St. Lawrence, Cartier found many Natives living with their Chief, Donnacona. This was the settlement of Stadacona. Chief Donnacona spoke freely about the Kenneta (which Cartier wrote as Canada) thus corroborating the information given to him by his two guides. This was how Canada got her name, as Cartier referred to the then-known area as Canada and marked it as such on his charts. As a tribute to Chief Donnacona it is quite proper to associate his name with the name of Canada. Therefore, the name was taken from that of the Chief of the Indian Village Stadacona situated near present site of Quebec City at the time of Jacques Cartier’s visit in 1535

 L`HISTOIRE DE L'ÉCUSSON
L`Écusson de NCSM DONNACONA montre deux mains serrées de Chief Donnacona et de Jacques Cartier : D'argent, trois feuilles d'érable rouges se rejoignant sur une seule tige sur un champ argent ou blanc.
Le Signification de l’écusson est le premier voyage en Amérique, où Jacques- Cartier ramena en France deux guerriers amérindiens qui lui servirent de guides lors de son deuxième voyage. Ils lui indiquèrent l'emplacement exact de Stadacona et de Hochelaga sur le Saint-Laurent, villages désignés en langage Huron-Iroquois par le mot Kenneta - qui signifie habitation. Cartier pensait que ses guides lui indiquaient le nom d'un pays qu'il n'avait pas encore exploré.
Cartier découvrit qu'un grand nombre d'Amérindiens, vivaient avec leur chef, Donnacona, à l'endroit où la rivière Saint-Charles se jette dans le Saint-Laurent. Il s'agissait du village de Stadacona. Donnacona rencontra Cartier plusieurs fois et lui parla abondamment de Kenneta (Cartier écrivit ce mot Canada) les renseignements donnés par les deux guides amérindiens furent ainsi confirmés. C'est comme cela le Canada fut baptisé et que Cartier désigna la région qu'il inscrivit sur ses cartes. En hommage au Chef Donnacona, il convena parfaitement d'associer son nom à celui du Canada. Le nom a donc été pris du chef du village indien Stadacona, situé près de l'emplacement actuel de la ville de Québec, lors de la visite de Jacques Cartier en 1535.
