Artist statement: The most important thing to an artist is the ability to “see”. Whether the visual concept is done with a camera, pen and ink or paints, it is secondary to the vision.
I am self-taught except for studious relationships with Turner, Hopper, Wyeth, Jamison, and Powers. Colored pencils, charcoal, graphite pencil and ink all may play a role at some time. I do not work in the abstract and I don’t strive for extreme details. I tend to let the medium take its own path until I establish some selective detail. I don’t use many colors in any one painting but rather limit the scope of pigments. I believe this helps keep the work unified. If I do choose to insert a contrasting color, the impact of that accent is magnified.
