As a child, she fled her Afghan village during the terrors of the Soviet bombings. Her photograph was on the cover of the National Geographic Magazine in the summer of 1985. I have a lasting impression of her piercing green eyes and her tattered red headscarf. I was haunted by her anonymity.
Years later, we learn her name and her story, Sharbat, iconic refugee. And we continue to witness the plight of millions of refugees. They too are anonymous in our daily news cycle. Can we recognize their humanity and our commonalities? Can we make the world a better home for every person?
