Butchers Mask
40x30 cm, acrylic on wood, 2019
This painting was created during a residency in Tripkau am Elbe and has been shown in MOM artspace Hamburg, MARRES Maastricht and KunstRAI Amsterdam.
From a series of small paintings that depict scenes from a fictitious theaterplay. The main character of the play would be a butcher who kills a pig on stage and cuts it up in pieces of meat. This particular painting started as a sketch for the headpiece of the butcher. Through a colorful and attractive aesthetic, Neumann presents us a world we’d normally rather look away from.
Although painting is his medium of choice, Neumann enjoys to collaborate with other disciplines to find new ways to stimulate different senses. Lightheartedly and with humor, he confronts himself and the viewer with his fears and obsessions, and he doesn’t shy away from practical and mental obstacles.
