Lamassu: Assyria's Strength , 2022
77 x 60 in (h x w)
Oil on Canvas

2022 Assyrian International Art Competition
First Place

Lamassu is one of the ancient majesties of Assyria that has always left me in awe. This creature has always been depicted as a hybrid with the body of a winged bull and the head of a human. Here, I attempted to portray this wondrous being in a new light by stripping the bull to its primitive form. This interpretation is inspired by how cavemen would have viewed the bull. Through distinct lines and strokes, stamina, fertility and strength are captured in this bull, the same qualities that defined the Assyrian empire.
