A French person buys an average of 9 kg of clothes per year, which amounts to 610 million kilos in France alone. These numbers have seen an increase in the last few years due to the phenomenon of Fast Fashion, which aims to get the latest styles on the market as fast as possible. Shoppers can snap items up while they are still at the height of their popularity, then discard them after just a few wears.
Nowadays, fast fashion brands produce about 52 “micro-seasons” a year—or one new “collection” a week. This started when Zara shifted to bi-yearly deliveries of new merchandise in the early 2000s. In our installation we take it to the extreme. How much of a difference between two collections is there really?

The way we represent this issue is through the concept of Expirability. Our aim is to challenge the way we consume fashion, and the impact that this practice has on our society. By exploring this concept we intend to create an open discussion about durability and how consuming at such a fast pace is impacting the lifetime of clothes and our planet. Essentially, the same way that products can be sold and consumed beyond their best before date in the food industry.
