Series: Zaghrouta Solidarity

Arty-Fact: "Your hands are tied! If you and everyone you know, including your youngest child, are under the constant threat of being handcuffed and detained without charge or trial at any time of day or night, then your hands are tied.

“For many years, I have found inspiration in zaghrouta (a type of celebratory Middle Eastern ululation), as a form of defiance in my work. Recently, my inspiration was renewed by the wave of photos spreading on social media of defiant Palestinians smiling at the camera while being beaten and humiliated, handcuffed under the threat of detention and eviction.

"Zaghrouta Solidarity is part of a body of work that sheds light on the vital role of Palestinian women in revolting against the occupation. I am highly inspired by the Arabic saying "revolution is female," which, while commonly used in the Middle East nowadays, is mostly associated with Palestinian women.

“Unfortunately, the world is not fully aware of the essential role of the revolutionary Palestinian woman. So, I would like to take this opportunity to celebrate, "with a defiant zaghrouta," this undeniable role of resistance that can be traced back to British colonization and continues today in the face of the current occupation.” - Rasha Eleyan
