"The Weight On My Shoulders"

Think back as far as you can remember. What kind of child were you? What kind of student, friend, person were you?

Who told you that?

From a young age, labels are placed on people. Children are placed into boxes and absorb the words they hear as truth. Students are subjected to the opinions and actions of their classmates, teachers, parents, and grades.

How heavy is a word? An experience? How heavy are a thousand? How long do we carry them with us?

I took a form of a woman’s figure around Alumni Hall and told people to “write down something that someone else has told them that they are”. My project explores not only the words, labels, and experiences that are placed on the shoulders of every human being, but the power in the destruction of those weights, and the beauty in self discovery.

My identity is found in my faith, my family, my friends, and my loves in life. My identity is displayed on the panels behind the figure, as meaningful quotes from my life. It is an incomplete reflection of my identity, but a display of the truth that I hold on to, despite the weights placed on my shoulders by people throughout my life.

As you absorb this project, I hope you reflect on the words you hold as truth, the beauty and destruction of the form, and the weight you may place on yourself and others.
