"This oil portrait of my brother Stephen done while he worked on a Masters of Music Composition -Julliard, NYC. He is reading "Imaginations"
( poetry of William Carlos Williams), hence its title.
Brahms is seen above piano. Object on his desk is an antique metronome...
My brother was fiercely independent despite being a cripple from birth. He never focused on it, rather dedicating himself as a musician, composer and college teacher of music. He commuted into NYC
for school and work. His first composition was published when he was 19. He performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. He inspired me to focus on my own artwork and writing...
Unfortunately he died (age 44) at the height of his ability and promise. Some of his music can be heard on You Tube. "Credo" (choral counterpoint masterpeice, 3min) and "Triumph of Hope"
(version two, 11 minutes- commissioned orchestral ) are my favorites. Like many other artists, Stephen had to overcome challenges to succeed."
This b&w image was used for a novel I wrote dedicated to my brother. The story involves climbing, creation of lyrical music and use of the subconscious mind for same.
Stephen's Credo can be found on You Tube -
