Artist Bio:
Hemangi is a multidisciplinary artist from Mumbai, India currently residing in Toronto, Canada. She is inspired by the pattern and decoration movement in her studio practice, focusing on 'cultural abstractions'. Her upbringing in a progressive, yet traditional Indian family, where she constantly questioned societal gender roles, is the predominant theme in her work. Her paintings are inspired by Indian textile patterns, colours, embroideries and weaving. She explores how fabrics and femininity intersect in Indian society. Through her work she looks to decompose truths of being a woman in India and disconnect patriarchy and culture to celebrate the rightful place of a woman in Indian society in its colourful glory.
