This book consists of various chapters on key stages of design and construction, and includes diagrams of the different types of classicizing columns, porticos and other ornaments commonly used in the Renaissance. The book was very popular in its day and contributed to the widespread popularity of neoclassicism in the seventeenth century.

The title page features an elaborate classicizing portico (entrance to a temple) replete with Corinthian columns and a Latin inscription that reads: “May no one ignorant of the liberal arts enter here”. This frames a portrait of Scamozzi and to either side are represented statues of two women who personify ‘theory’ and ‘experience’, the prerequisites for designing and constructing fine buildings.
