Carisbrooke Castle; Moonlight, Carisbrooke Castle , 1838
24 x 12 in (h x w)
Etching, drypoint, roulette

The two prints represent different “states” of the same print, where the artist returned to the original copper plate to rework the image, altering the scene from one of daytime to night. David Charles Read explores the changing effects of a moonlit or stormy sky, adding dense patterns of hatching and cross-hatching—against which the forms of clouds emerge—and accentuating the silhouette of the castle and mountain.
