Cherry Blossoms at Night on Naka-no-chō in the Yoshiwara , c. 1832-1838
16.4 x 20.3 in (h x w)
Woodblock print

Here, Hiroshige depicts people who might interact on a typical night during cherry blossom season in Yoshiwara, one of the Edo’s licensed pleasure quarters. Notably, an oiran, or high-ranking sex worker, wears an orange gown and is accompanied by her young attendants, as a possible suitor in a black haori coat looks over his shoulder at her. (RR)
