Self, from Dust Shaped Hearts , 2006
30 x 22 in (h x w)
Earth pigment and casein monoprint

Conceived as part of the series Dust Shaped Hearts, which mobilized closely cropped, large-scale portraits to address the universal struggle against intolerance, Camp’s self-portrait reflects his interest in capturing his subject’s character. The scale of the print makes visible Camps’ use of organic printing materials—milk and earth—to emphasize the biological, rather than mechanical, nature of the photographic face. (JB)
