Head of an Old Man , 1895
19 x 15 in (h x w)
Herkomergravure

This print’s painterly inkiness, seen especially in the background and scratched curls in the sitter’s beard, has been accomplished by a new printing technique invented by the artist. The “herkomergravure” allowed Sir Hubert von Herkomer to pull multiple impressions from a monotype plate, resulting in an intaglio image, like the present example, with visually arresting textures.
