Yvaral cleverly riffs on the work of his famous father, Victor Vasarely, who is regarded as one of the founds of the op art movement. Op art often plays with optical illusions to make two-dimensional images appear three-dimensional and thereby captivate the viewer, overturning the old Renaissance notion of the picture as a window. Here Yvaral uses the medium of print ironically to actualize a three-dimensional wall sculpture that intervenes in our space physically, not simply optically. (NC)
