The three living and the 3 dead
Opus Anglicanum

POA

This is the piece that won "Innovative use of textiles" at the Fine Art Textiles Award, although every stitch is done in the style of the c14th. I was writing a book on opus when I had a random goth moment and included a grim reaper project, whilst researching medieval images of skeletons I was reminded of the tale of the 3 living and the 3 dead, where 3 young ne'er do wells go out into the forest and meet 3 walking dead, who lived lives of such wickedness that death will not take them and so they are forced to walk the earth as rotting corpses. I didn't think young men today would learn the same lesson, so I decided to update it. the dead are taken from a medieval illustration of the tale, but I moved the setting to a grubby railway arch in the city and did a lot of research into urban streetwear. The graffiti I saw pasted over a road sign on the A1 and thought it was hilariously stupid.
