第二版,倫敦:printed by W. Bulmer and Co. for G. Nicol, 1798

The book was first published in 1797. This edition was published in three volumes which cover the motivations for the embassy that led by George Macartney in 1792, and the context of early China-Western relations, the journey along the coast followed by the arrival of the embassy in Beijing, and impressive range of maps and engravings produced during the embassy including the portrait of Emperor Qianlong, drawings of the Summer Palace in Beijing and the Great Wall. The knowledge about China collected during the embassy was quickly disseminated across the Western world, and the embassy was enshrined as one of the most significant moments in Sino-Western relations.
