Rock on the New Long March , 1989

"Rock on the New Long March" (新长征路上的摇滚) is Cui Jian's (崔健) first solo album, released in 1989, and the first original rock album in Chinese history. The album was released at a time when China was undergoing reform and opening up. The songs in this album express the post-60s and post-70s generation's confusion, loss, loneliness and helplessness under the impact of the reform and opening up. The meaning of the "new Long March" itself is ambiguous. On the one hand, it implies the coming "modernization", the country will concentrate on economic development, reform and opening up, and enter a new stage. On the other hand, it also refers to the radical practices of the fifties and seventies that have just passed. The intense melody of the song is meant to both march in the direction of the former and bid a fond farewell to the latter. In general, the album "Rock on the New Long March" has a close relationship with the social situation in China during the reform and opening up period. The songs on this album depict the uncertainty and disarray that characterized the society at the time, but they also convey people's hopes for the future and their support for reform and opening up.
