The artwork is "Lián Pō" (廉颇) from the series "Peking Opera Masks" (《京剧脸谱》). The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the People's Republic of China issued a special postage stamp on January 25, 1980, to show the unique facial mask art in Chinese opera. The facial mask of "Lián Pō" is from the Peking Opera "General and Minister Harmonize" (《将相和》).
The Peking Opera "General and Minister Harmonize" revolves around Lín Xiàngrú (蔺相如) successfully returning the precious jade to the State of Zhao and being appointed to a high position. Lián Pō, feeling discontented, confronts Lín Xiàngrú on the street. However, Lín Xiàngrú prioritized the safety of the country and toleranced Lián Pō. Eventually, Lián Pō feels remorseful and apologizes with a thorny branch. Their deep friendship became a renowned tale, spreading the story of "General and Minister Harmonize."
The stamp portrays the facial mask of Lián Pō: a horizontal line is drawn between the eyes, and a vertical black line extends from the nose to the forehead, forming a cross shape, so it is named "Cross-face." He is a character that taite acknowledging and rectifying his mistakes, making him an endearing character.
In addition, pink facial masks in Peking Opera generally represent elderly characters with loyalty, courage, and righteousness. Lián Pō is a kind-heartedness and loyal character, suitable for pink facial masks.
