Black American soldier standing by toppled Frederick III statue, WW1 , 1917
Photograph

Photo postcard shows the toppled statue of Frederick III with several White men and one BlackAmerican soldier at the left. The sculpture, commissioned by Frederick III, was created by Christian Daniel Rauch, in 1878. The statue was toppled as a sign of victory against Germany. Most likely, the Black soldier was led in battle by a Black officer who trained at Fort Des Moines, in Iowa.
