Plastic Mermaid , 2023

To me, art is a medium that is not only used to convey beauty, but bring light to the neglected problems of the world. This work shows a woman, referencing Ariel, drowning while her legs are tied together with trash in the ocean, making a "plastic mermaid". Ariel, a Disney princess of a well-known children's story that little children admire and trash in the ocean might sound like unrelated topics. However, the plastic we put into the ecosystem everyday harm the children of the present and future, crushing their dreams as we slowly make the planet inhabitable. However, society and companies ignore this problem, which was even further confirmed during the process of making the art on how easily I was able to find plastic and other trash to add to my work. Eventually, like watercolor, the consequences will bleed through the ecosystem and reach mankind. By admiring this work, I hope viewers understand my intent and begin to make conscious choices to help our world that we share.
