ARCHITECTURE School, 1486

From Gulistan (Rose Garden) by Sa‘di (d. 1292) held by National Museum for Asian Art, Washington DC, USA. LTS1995.2.33
COMMENT: The action takes place outside the school. The young man discovers the bearded traveler is from the Perisan city of Shiraz, the birthplace of the celebrated poet Sa’di. He asks the man to recite a poem by Sa‘di, without realizing he is addressing the poet himself.
Inside the school, the children are quietly busy reading and writing. In the foreground a child is about to be punished by his mother (wielding a stick).
Note the beautiful detailed decoration of the walls.
