For many American Black women, our hair is a major part of our identity when it comes to beauty. Afros, braids, weave, or perms, how Black women style our hair determines how we are viewed in society. The subject Angie, heavily identified with her hair being a source of what she and others determined as beautiful. Her sophomore year of college she was diagnosed with Alopecia and decided to shave her head bald. Her silhouette changed completely and so did her meaning of beauty. In these Black and White photographs I aim to capture her new silhouette and highlight a version of beauty that is often deemed undesirable for modern American Black women. The simplicity of her now bald head created beautiful shapes and lines that would not be possible with her previous hair. The beauty of Black women is truly boundless and our hair is not our only source of beauty. Our silhouettes come in many shapes, sizes, and styles all to be celebrated.
