Pride is the opposite of shame. In a world where sexuality has been demonised, this artwork was a statement about taking power back. With so many art shows meticulously examining artwork to exclude anything provocative, I proudly created this piece to rebel against the status quo.

I am a figurative artist based in New Zealand who specialises in white on black pastel artwork. The reference photograph was used with permission from Roseanne Jones. Using no darks, this painting is made with white pastel on black pastel mat paper - drawing only the light. It is referencing sexuality and pushing against layers of shame built up over generations. I believe that people should be free to safely explore their own identity and sexuality without judgement from others.
