ARTIST BIO

Odilia was born in Madrid in 1993. She graduated from City & Guilds of London Art School, where she won The Board of Trustees Award for Outstanding Work at the Graduate Show.

Before graduating she was selected to do a residency at the Griffin Gallery, this opportunity inspired her to continue her artistic research in a freer way, traveling the world devoting herself to long periods of time to deepen in her artistic practice, while doing residencies.

She has also been part of the Brocket Gallery, where she has done a number of exhibitions in the UK. Independently, she has been part of group and solo exhibitions in and outside of Europe. In 2020 she started an MA in Sculpture at the RCA and did other small courses to help developing her practice at Turps Banana.

Currently, her artistic necessities are taking her into different artistic fields. Delving into creating in a more dynamic and non-material way through her body. She is now doing a physical theatre training at the Laboratorio Escuela in Barcelona with Jessica Walker.

Creating with her own body, dancing, performing has been a great inspiration for her painting, sculpture and installation practices.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Adapting art as a way of living, I tend to immerse myself in unfamiliar environments, traveling through space like a nomad searching for a new oasis to explore and live in.
I am concerned with creative strategies and new methodologies of engagement with the environment around me. Focusing on our ‘ability-to-respond’ and connect more deeply with the world in which we live in. Exploring more in depth the relationship between imagination and sustainable futures, ethics and aesthetics, ecological healing and imaginal work, functional and the symbolic and freedom and responsibility.
Responding to the correlation of our two worlds, the real outer physical world and the subjective inner world of thoughts, desires, imagination. I believe my inner attitude, thoughts, impulses and values shape my actions and automatically shape the world. I am mobilising my creative approach to find a non- destructive way of making art and living on Earth.
Gathering abandoned already made objects and diverse materials has become a key element of generating work. The inner and outer act of engagement with the environment, in the moment of collecting materials, intersects with my own and collective intention, consciousness and system change.
The observation of all these materials and objects together start a chain of effects in my mind. The dynamic relationship created by the natural and the unnatural objects. The reaction with each other that then creates a tension that allows the above to merge together. The easiest way for me to explain this is by imagining
a chemical reaction. The movement of the particles sometimes fast sometimes slow, a discussion always rhythmic. An ever-changing emulsion. Thus, creating a constant in my work.
