This work is a shoe I made years ago. I have been always interested in shoes as part of my daily life, and it has been a continuously present topic in my artist career. I use the motif to express my ideas on gender, sexuality, and socio-cultural regulations upon the marginalised individuals, especially women. The isolated, single high-heeled shoe visually implies a problematisation and rejection of the stereotypical gendered meanings imposed upon shoes and other fashion objects and therefore emphasising the idea of a 'de-gendering' of appearance and looks that we encounter in our daily life.
Shoes have been one of my constant interests throughout my life. High-heels are often associated with a 'feminine' way of dressing. My work intends to challenge the idea of a gendered 'fashion', which draws a distinct line between the 'feminine' and 'masculine' ways of dressing and outward appearances in general. The male rejection of wearing a 'women's shoe' is a rejection of being seen as 'feminine', which reflects the devaluing of the female gender and femininity as negative in our daily production and reception of appearances.
