Abstractions Gerhard Richter
15 x 25 in (h x w)
painting

Inspired by Artist Gerhard Richter who is best known for a prolific and stylistically varied exploration of the medium of painting, often incorporating and exploring the visual effects of photography. Students were introduced with the idea of abstraction. They have been shown with Gerhard’s famous abstract painting, we talked about his use of colors, the forms and images. Inspired by some of the abstract painting each student created their own style of painting with acrylic paints. Started with the background, each student picked three colors and painted the background. The tools that we used for creating paint strokes and textures were a hard-plastic card or a flat brush. Students used the card to scrape, drag and dab the paints across the painted background in different directions. Lastly, students learnt how to create splatters and drips with liquid paint, they held their brush like a hammer then made black and while splatters on top of their finished abstract painting. The goal of this art project was to showcase the possibilities of unconventional tools and allowed students to practice with making splatters.
