At Swakane Canyon, the excavation on one side of the canyon could be managed with three Fresno earth-moving scrapers merrily hauled by teams of horses. On the other side, it was a different story. Here they had twelve men, making twice the going pay rate, drilling by hand and painstakingly moving the earth by pick and shovel.
