1925 - Gentleman Jim

Loyal employees worked hard for Jim Goodfellow, referring to him as "Gentleman Jim."

Sometimes Jim wondered if they would make it through. In fact, the Swakane Road project was so expensive and the company so new to construction that one Friday afternoon, Jim couldn’t make payroll. With a knot of dread in his middle, he drove out to the job site and gathered everyone around. “The checks haven’t come in. We don’t have the money yet,” he told them. “But we’ll take care of you and see that you get paid as soon as we can.” The men looked at him. After only a short time, they thought of their employer as “Gentleman Jim.” A man with a kind word for everyone, who always found something to compliment, he wanted them to succeed at work and in life. Every last man looked Jim in the eye and said something along the lines of, “Don’t worry. We trust you. We know you’ll pay us when you can.” They went back to work without losing a moment. Jim swallowed a lump in his throat and felt sincere gratitude for these hardworking people. Because of their faith and loyalty, Goodfellow Bros. successfully completed its first job and was able to move on to the next one.
