The unnatural proximity of the female faces, in a setting that is almost impossible to reproduce in a real-life pose, suggests intimacy. Their mouths are close enough to smell each other’s breath, but their line of sight drift in various directions. While the lips, close enough to kiss, form a series of mouths that seem to want to say something but can’t in the end.
The artist reflects on the lack of connection among people, even with every means of communication at our disposal, the many barriers that have kept us apart in the past removed and the potential of real relationships based on a reciprocity of giving and receiving a reality. Proximity alone doesn’t cut it. Indeed, the ‘selfies’ of our connectedness often show just the opposite. In which direction we look, namely towards each other, ultimately leads us to say: I can see you.
Meinolf Otto, mostly works on various drafts for his compositions on photoshop before he begins his work on a large canvas.
