One of the artist's busy, vivid Whitechapel genre scenes depicting a crowded market place with a young woman and two children in the foreground. The woman, dressed in a shabby brown overcoat with a headscarf covering her dark hair, is shown in left profile, holding a baby, dressed in white, who looks to the right; at her elbow is a blonde toddler clutching a teddy bear to her chest. The paint is generally applied very thinly but the woman's face and hair are more densely painted and more highly finished. This strong composition is repeated in a number of other works, specifically on the mother-child motif, and in separate studies of small children, explored in both oils and in sketches. Frankfurther also carried out a number of other compositions, both sketches and oils, of market scenes.
