“Lockdown portrait” è una serie di autoritratti che si presenta come resoconto del tempo trascorso in isolamento e come esplorazione dell’immagine di sé stimolata dall’autoriflessione.
Ora che la proliferazione delle maschere come dispositivi di protezione sanitaria ha rimodellato la nostra identità collettiva, Wearing ha deciso di eliminare gli strati con cui era solita celare il suo volto, mettendosi a nudo davanti allo spettatore, e guardandosi dall’esterno, come fosse un oggetto. In alcuni dipinti, distoglie lo sguardo dallo specchio, da chi osserva, per indirizzarlo verso uno spazio imprecisato ed enigmatico; rompendo così con le convenzioni del genere dell’autoritratto.

Now that the proliferation of masks as devices of health protection has reshaped our collective identity, Wearing has decided to eliminate the layers with which she used to hide her face, laying bare in front of the viewer, and looking at herself from the outside, as if she were an object. In some paintings, she takes her gaze away from the mirror, from the viewer, to direct it towards an undefined and enigmatic space; thus breaking with the conventions of the self-portrait genre.
