Jamil Hellu’s work has often involved a personal exploration of his own visibility as a queer immigrant. This work acts as a metaphor for the conflicts found within the democracy of his adopted homeland, the pitfalls of the tropes of hyper-masculinity, and reveals the facade behind both mythologies. However in dealing with the anxieties of the global spread of COVID-19 this hero archetype also ironically provides a comforting symbol of resilience and resistance.
