This is pair of scenes depicting a cavalry battle between Europeans and Turks is typical of an Orientalist taste that emerged in the 18th century. This Flemish artist imagines the actions on the battle field as well as the elaborate uniforms of the Ottoman soldiers. How does this imagery fit within the longstanding tradition of Europeans imagining encounters with peoples beyond Europe’s borders?
