Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, Alamosa, Colorado , 1959
archival pigment print

Two Rio Grande machinists ponder the next move needed to keep three–foot–gauge Mikado 2–8–2 no. 473 on the road after she departs the solitude of the Alamosa, Colorado, roundhouse. Steam locomotion required the skills of many crafts: boilermakers, plumbers, electricians, laborers, and welders, to say nothing of firemen and engineers.
