St. Johnsbury & Lamoille County Railroad, Lamoille Valley, Vermont , 1955
archival pigment print

In one of the photographer’s favorite images, the St. Johnsbury & Lamoille County’s daily mixed train no. 44 rolls east through the Lamoille Valley of northern Vermont on its ninety–six-mile journey to St. Johnsbury, while horses—two racing the train—enjoy one of the lush pastures in the area. The tranquility of their domain will not be disturbed until the same time tomorrow by this lightly traveled shortline railroad.
